Some people would think blogging about power strips isn’t, well, the ‘sexiest’ thing in the world. These people are usually right. But when a simple product comes along and reminds you that a.) there are things in life that cause more headaches than they should, and b.)there are actually ways to make those headaches go away, it’s worth mentioning.

Introducing the Power Squid. Before you ask - no, it’s not a failed concept for a superhero. The Power Squid is actually a pretty cool device, in that it provides a lot of flexibility that traditional power strips don’t have, owing to the fact that it has a much more efficient form factor, the same form that gives it the name. Granted, if you look at it too long it does begin to look like the Davy Jones guy from Pirates of the Caribbean – but it actually solves a lot of problems that you get with traditional power strips and surge protectors. With traditional strips/surge protectors, you typically run into one of two scenarios:

Scenario one - you use the strip correctly, laying it flat on its back, but now you can’t put it under anything like a file cabinet, because the strip + power cords and AC supplies makes it too bulky. So you leave it out and exposed, where you end up accidentally kicking it all day long, vaguely worried that you’ll somehow wind up electrocuting yourself.

Scenario two - you lay the strip on its side so that it can fit under something, which you’re pretty sure is violating a code somewhere, and which makes you vaguely worried that you’ll somehow wind up electrocuting yourself.

The Power Squid is actually designed with form-factor in mind, offering you a much smaller base unit attached to five cords, all grounded, and which allow you to connect 5 devices simultaneously. Because there isn’t a ‘strip’ in the power strip, you can bend the cords around corners and objects on the floor, giving you a lot more flexibility as to where you can place the unit.

Another bonus is that you never run into that ‘my AC power supply for device X is so large I can’t plug anything else into the outlet next to it’ hassle. You all know what I’m talking about there. It also functions as a UL-rated surge protector, with protection and ground indicator lights, and each of the 5 outlets (as well as the base plug) are grounded. The primary cord (that attaches to the wall) is 39” long, and each of the 5 outlets are themselves attached to smaller cords of varying lengths (two 6 inch, two 8 inch, and one 10 inch, respectively), that allow you even greater flexibility.
