The Kindle2 introduces by amazon is an “e-book” reader, with free wireless access for browsing and purchasing from a library of 90,000 digitized books (over 230,000 books today), plus dozens of magazines and daily newspapers, hundreds of blogs and more.
The Kindle2, unlike other e-readers, had a store full of current content at reasonable prices. Every major publishing house was on-board, with hardcover top-sellers in Kindle editions and most of the backcatalog for even less — as significant for the book world as Apple’s iTunes Store debut was for the music business.
Kindle2 is not cannibalizing paper book sales, however; CEO says that Kindle owners are buying about the same number of physical books as before while also buying Kindle books at a rate of 1.6 to 1.7 times their paper purchases. (more…)
